Three is the magic number 2019 is proving to be Austrian Bernd Wiesberger’s golden year after making it three wins on the European Tour in the last six months. His latest triumph at the Italian Open sits nicely next to his Scottish Open and Made in Denmark trophies already in his cabinet from this year as he once again demonstrated his patience to prevail at Olgiata Golf Club, Rome. Trailing Matthew Fitzpatrick by three-shots heading into Sunday, a fine bogey-free 65 was enough to get the job done and lead the Englishman home by a single shot on -16. Fitzpatrick will rue a double-bogey on the ninth that proved to be his undoing despite an eagle chance at the seventeenth and a birdie opportunity at the eighteenth to take it to a playoff. The victory propels Wiesberger to the top of the Race to Dubai standings and leaves him in pole position for a Ryder Cup spot - Impressive stuff from a man who missed the last seven months of last year with a wrist injury!
